Asthma and Cold Relief, The Natural Way!

Aromatherapy for Asthmatics 12/09/19


Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease process of the airways. Even when the symptoms are seemingly gone, the underlying inflammation remains. Essential oils can be helpful, especially when used in-between episodes to reduce stress and inflammation. Asthma often accompanies other conditions- gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), rhinosinusitis, and obstructive sleep apnea, which are worsened by stress and anxiety. Essential oils, even organic botanical grade oils may trigger airflow obstruction or other asthmatic symptoms. So, we advise doing a ‘sniff’ test prior to using any inhalation therapy, with essential oils, to see if there is any adverse reaction to any of these essential oils. If there are no negative reactions to any of these essential oils during the sniff test, then using this soothing rub when no symptoms are present may prevent or reduce the severity of attacks.


Asthma Inhalation Rub


· 6 drops Lavender oil

· 4 drops geranium oils

· 1 drop marjoram oil

· 1 drop peppermint or ginger oil

· 1 oz. vegetable oil

Combine the ingredients. Rub on throat and chest after a warm bath or shower, especially before bedtime.


Essential Oil Steam


· ¼ teaspoon eucalyptus oil

· 3 cups of water

Bring water to a simmer, turn off heat and add essential oils for asthma. Place your face (eyes closed) over the steam and drape a towel over the back of your head. Breathe in steam, coming up for fresh air as needed. You may also try this steam treatment with lavender oil instead, or if preferred. For a chest rub combine these essential oils that have a decongestant and antihistamine properties… peppermint or ginger, German chamomile (which is thought to prevent histamine release), Frankincense, marjoram, and rose encourage deep breathing and allow the lungs to more fully expand. To reduce bronchial spasms, use the relaxants: chamomile, lavender, rose, geranium, and marjoram.

This is a safe essential oil steam for small children or babies: put some very hot water in the bath tub, add several drops of lavender oil to the hot water. Holding the child or baby in your arms, hold them over the steam. If you find that steaming makes it more difficult to breathe, then try using a diffuser or humidifier makes inhalation therapy a little easier. But remember to always do a ‘sniff’ test prior the use of any essential that you have not tried before. By the way, these essential oils for asthma also make a great foot rub, combining the relaxing aspects of massage itself with the properties of the oils.
