What is something that keeps you awake at night, makes you turn red at the slightest provocation, and is the center of all your thoughts? No, it’s not a new romance, it’s itchy skin!! A persistent-can’t stop won’t stop itch of its own kind of special torture, whether it’s from a bug bite or some super dry skin! And if your Aloe Vera lotion isn’t quite cutting it, having an arsenal of essential oils on hand to help soothe (and even wipe out) your scratchy, dry, scaly ailments is…well, essential.
Nature, through essential oils, has given us many proven remedies for dry, itchy skin. Following are 3 essential oils and the, particular itch each oil is best used for:
· Bug Bites; Tea Tree oil is great for use on bug bites of any kind. It is well known for its antiseptic and anti-viral properties, so it can also soothe the itchiness and discomfort of most bug bites.
HOW TO USE: Tea Tree oil can very drying, so it is always necessary to mix it with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or sunflower oil, or mix with a lotion.
· Dry Flaky Skin; German Chamomile oil is a potent anti-inflammatory oil. It contains a natural antioxidant Bisabolol. This oil is excellent for soothing the itches caused by dry, sensitive skin. And the oil has a very pleasant honey apple fragrance and is characteristically blue in fragrance.
HOW TO USE; add a few drops to a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or sunflower oil, before applying to the skin.
· Other kinds of itchy skin; Gotu Kola essential oil, is able to repair and sooth dry itchy skin. This oil can go by many different names, IE: Tiger Grass, Asiatic pennyworth, or cica, to name a few. This oil is known for its ability to sooth the itch of eczema patches, or the stretching skin itch of pregnancy. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help sooth redness too.
HOW TO USE; Add a few drops to a carrier oil or lotion, or salve, before applying to the skin.
There are many natural home remedies that can provide relief. Menthol is an essential oil found in the mint family of plants. One such essential oil is Peppermint. Using Peppermint in moisturizing lotions or creams can provide much soothing relief from itchy dry skin. And it has a cooling effect as well. And it has been suggested that “cooling down” the itch is also helpful and effective. So, keeping your mixture of itch soothing oil or lotion in the refrigerator can be a way of calming that itch even more.
Itchy skin can be caused by a wide range of conditions, including dryness, dandruff, bug bites, rashes and allergies. Skin that is uncontrollably itching or is accompanied by swelling should be examined by a doctor or Dermatologist.
